Make-Do Monday March 2

Make-Do Mondays

is a carnival dedicated to sharing the creative,
frugal or even humble ways we’re making-do with what we have
or what we can acquire in a frugal way.

[If you came here to find Pizza Night - Click here. Otherwise stay here and read the real entry for Make-Do Monday! Some days I really wonder if I will ever get things right!!!!:) ]

A simple thing I did around Christmas time was make some pincushions for my thread spools. I was doing a lot of hand sewing and kept misplacing my needles. So I gathered up some scrap material and made these pin cushions. They sure came in handy because I didn't have to haul the big pin cushion around. The spool and pin cushion are one small unit.

The blue set with embroidered hearts are in my Etsy Shoppe.
(Click on the photo, it will take you to my Shoppe and you can see more photos)
They are super easy to make and I have made several now and each time I innovate a new way to attach them to the spool.

If you want to make your own, I would be happy to give you instructions. I am not sending you to my shoppe to buy! Only for photos and if you want help, I can share with you any of my knowledge!!!

How many times do you innovate or make-do a day? Are their times in your life that you seem to always be in the make-do lifestyle? Well I can tell you that I am in that lifestyle right now, I guess I always lean that way. I try to do everything myself first, and if I can't do it I call in an expert or helper.
Have you ever woke up in a cold sweat from a dream that seemed too real, like it was real life happening? Were you 'making-do and innovating' to save lives?

Anyway..... Here is a story about carrying make-do too far.......... or is it just far enough?

Woman Saves Crashing Plane
with Homemade Parachute

March 1, 2009
By Shariskishe

::Over The Ocean Government News reporting:: An unidentified woman made World Headlines today because of her part in the safe landing of Flight N237Q originating in Saratoga Springs, Utah heading for Laie, Hawaii.

“All of the sudden we were in trouble,” the woman said. “I knew something was wrong right away. And then the Captain came on the radio and said the plane had lost power and we were plummeting to the Ocean below. He told us to brace for the crash landing.” She paused for a moment and continued, “I did not hear anything else because my brain and hands were taking over.”

She explained that she grabbed her carryon bag and pulled out a space blanket, some duct tape and some yarn. “I always bring a project that I need to finish when I travel. So there was the yarn, or the strings I needed,” she said. She then took the items and crafted a parachute. Then with the help of the other passengers and crew they attached the parachute to the plane using the emergency exits.

“It is truly amazing that this worked,” exclaimed the pilot, a twenty year veteran. “I remember making these parachutes as a kid with our toy GI Joe's and my sister's Barbies. We never really had all that much success with them. But I am sure glad she tried it today. And I'm glad she got the balance part correct.”

We asked her how she felt about being a hero. “I am not a hero, the other passengers and crew are. They supported my idea and we all ran with it. Without them, well, I could never have done it myself...” she said. “I am just glad everything went so well, you know, no one was injured and such.”

Because of the safe landing, many of the passengers found a silver lining in the experience. “I pulled my seat flotation device out and jumped from the plane’s wing," said one of the unidentified passengers, who was dripping wet but smiling, "I was body surfing, I mean, seat flotation surfing and soon a lot of people were joining in the fun.”

No word yet on why the plane lost power, but we are happy to report that it was a safe landing and no lives were lost.

**However, due to the use of non-approved parachute material, the woman is now under investigation for material fraud and name fraud. Calling her 'make do' item a parachute is in violation with the new Politically Correctness Name Law. Using a space blanket as a chute is in violation with the Original Material Suggested Use Law. No charges have been filed. But then the Government does take it's time.

  1. What a clever, make-do solution (and fun post overall)! I love the idea of individual pincushions per spool of thread. I'm going to tell my daughter about this and see if it will help her get some of her handwork done more efficiently. She's only 14, but has taken on a few projects where that may come in helpful.

    Thanks for participating!

  2. What a great idea! I don't do any sewing to speak of, but when I do it is always hand sewing as I don't have a sewing machine. This would be a fun little project. Thanks!!
