My Aloha Friday for April 17th

Dishes

Growing up we had 8 people living in our home. We did not have a dishwasher or should I say we did not have an automatic dishwasher. We actually had plenty of dishwashers, my dad would always say.

I remember that washing dishes was a real 'chore' for us. We always would complain and cause trouble because we did not want to do such a hard job. Oh, boy, what babies we were!!!

Even when we got an automatic dishwasher we still didn't want to do the dishes. It still took toooooooo long!!!

(one day we timed the emptying and refilling of the dishwasher- less than 10 minutes! unreal..... Emptying usually takes me about 3 minutes these days.)

My children are going through that phase, "it takes so long, mom. I don't have time." Bunk!!! Angel could have emptied the dishwasher yesterday as she waited for her friend to pick her up. But she wouldn't, because it would take too long. Actually she could have filled it up too before her ride came. I didn't push it. But she is facing consequences today. That is even better for me, anyway.

Now that I am grown up, at least I think I am grown up, I enjoy washing dishes more that I used to. I don't do them by hand often, but as I am washing the non-dishwasher items and large pans, I can think and enjoy time to myself. No One wants to join me in the kitchen for cleanup, so other than the bathroom, cleanup time is a chance for alone time. LOL......

You don't have to think about what you are doing as you wash, so your thoughts can be totally on something you want to think about. It can be a time of reflection, self study, listening to music or book on tape. This time can effectively be manipulated to what you want your mind focusing on. You shouldn't have very many interruptions either!!

In my practically perfect life, I would like to ban the Dishwasher and begin doing the dishes by hand and assign that chore to me and me alone. Then I can take advantage of the free time it would allow my brain to enjoy!!! I may do this---- someday......... So now I would like to know:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My question to you this week is:

Do you like to do dishes by hand?
or
Do you prefer to use the dishwasher?

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. I've never had a dishwasher so can't compare, but there is something very therapeutic about doing dishes by hand!

  2. I'm quite the oddity, I must say. I wash my dishes by hand and THEN run them through the dishwasher. You know, just to be safe and make sure they're all sterile or something.

If there is a water shortage in South Texas, you may have just found the culprit.

  7. I hate doing dishes. It is my least favorite thing. I would rather clean the toilets. I don't know why but I don't do them period. My husband does. But if I HAD to, dishwasher.

  9. I really hate doing the dishes. I told my husband I wasn't going to move here unless we had a dishwasher in our apartment *L* I wasn't completely serious, but I'm glad that he took it that way ;) I did discover that if I use dishwashing gloves that I find the experience far more tolerable than if I don't! So that's good =)

I always use the dishwasher unless it's crusty pots/pans. Makes life just a tad easier.

  14. If I had a dishwasher, I'd be ALL OVER that. Sadly I don't so it's all by hand. I can't wait till my kids are old enough that I can make THEM do the dishes, lol.

  15. Some I do by hand and some in the dishwasher. The dish washer uses less water,so that is the preferred method. However there are a few things I want to hand wash.

  19. Some stuff is just easier to wash by hand. That way you can fit more of the essential stuff into the dishwasher. That's my 2 cents.

  20. Definitely prefer to use the dishwasher.

  21. I prefer to use the dishwasher, and I think I use it way tooo often. LOL! Now, there are some things that I "have" to wash by hand, and I'll do it...but I don't like it. :)

  22. I grew up with a dishwasher and still prefer it. With that said, I always hand wash pots and pans. Do not want them ruined in the dishwasher.

  23. Dishes are my ENEMY! I HATE Them.... I often will leave them in hopes that the dinner task of cooking and then clean up will become a 50/50 task between me and my spouse. nope. no such luck. I guess he hates them just as much as me. I dont mind loading the dishwasher... but unloading it is an annoyance. and, I am NEVER alone anywhere in this house. If I hear "MAMA" one more time.... I tell ya! LOL!

  24. Dishwasher for sure. I grew up washing dishes by hand. It was never fun!

  25. You know those "Geico googly-eyes"...well that's what my dishes are doing to me right now! They are piled in the sink...waiting in line for the dishwasher to be emptied...that's a whole 'nother issue. So YES I hate washing them by hand, I PREFER the dishwasher.

  26. I would be a very unhappy woman without my dishwasher. I was the eldest of 9 kids growing up and I was forced to do the dishes all the time. I hated it and hand washing did take forever, so I prefer my dishwasher but if something needs to be washed by hand, I will also.

  27. we are like you used to be family of 8 and we do dishes by hand no dishwasher here

  28. Dishwasher for most. Handwash for bigger stuff and pots and pans. Dishwashers actually use less water in the long run...

  29. I dread doing either really. But once I start washing them, by hand, I find that I don't mind it at all. It gives me time to zone out and think, like you said. Most days anyway. My oldest is only 3, so she's in the kitchen all the time!
I don't mind filling up the washer either. It's putting them away I hate!

  30. We have a dishwasher so we usually use that but I do like doing my "good dishes" by hand. Nothing BEATS handwashing :)

  31. I wash by hand.

Thank for stopping by my AF.

  32. Wow, you got a ton of comments on this! I wash my dishes by hand. I have a dishwasher, but I only use it every few months, just to make sure it still works. I like to do the dishes and think of the day, work through a problem, and admire my dishes that I love so much. It's just my husband and I, so I usually only do them twice a day (once if we didn't eat lunch at home)

I put away the dishes while I am waiting for the microwave, or for water to heat up, or while I'm waiting for someone to answer the phone. It just takes a moment and I just don't see it as a chore. But I'm also not a kid LOL Kids see a lot of things as chores.
