Things to Ponder

Why isn't there mouse flavored cat food?

So this question has finally come up. I have wondered for 49 years now when someone would finally ask this so blatantly obvious question.

But what is the answer? Or maybe the real answer? Who knows......... maybe this is why the question was never in print before.

I think that if the pet food companies would hold roundups and gather in all the rats and mice to be processed into cat food, our world would be a better place. Right now the mice and rats and voles (especially around my house) are running the animal world and causing great concerns in health and cleanliness around the world. They need to be controlled!!

So call out the ca't'valries! Call out the live mouse-traps! Let's get the mice, rat and vole populations under control and waste not their meat as we do this. Let's make awesome cat food from one of the cat's favorite food sources! Let's be frugal and use what God gave us, or gave the cats that is.

My cats are doing all they can against the voles here at my house and our neighborhood. Thanks guys- Beebee, Willow and Marshmallow. But there are plenty of neighborhoods that don't have such great mouser protection. Let the live traps open their doors and provide income to the trappers as we feed the worlds 'starving for the mouse flavor food' cats!!

Who is with me? This is a good fight.... so join in.

Make-Do Sandwich Pouch

Handy Sandwich Pouch Make-Do

So while we were camping, I made CTBC sandwiches. Chicken, Tomato, Bacon and Cheese that is. Is it always requested when we are camping or picnicking. So I took my pre-cooked and drained bacon from the crock pot and diced it small to resemble crumbled. I use the ends and pieces of bacon, so some of it is thick and you have to cut it into dices. I used about 1/2 cup.

Then I cubed 2 small pre-cooked chicken breasts, that were still frozen, not frozen solid though.

I diced up one small Roma tomato. Added about 2/3 cup shredded cheese. Used just enough Mayonaise to stick everything together.

Then I fished pieces of lettuce from our pre-mixed salad bag and put these pieces on bread slices that were lightly covered with mayo. Then I put a large spoonful of salad on top of the lettuce and covered this with the other bread slice.

The filling was wanting to fall out of my bread slices, so I took some Aluminum foil and made a holding pouch. I didn't have any plastic wrap or wax paper. This made it easier for everyone, including Hubby and myself to eat without the filling falling out.

Fire, Marshmallow and Foil Dinners

Friday at Aspen Grove Campground

It was time to make a fire.  We had a very nice fire pit!  Got to love it.

Everything thing in the campground was wet. It rained all week until we arrived and then we had one day of no rain, that was Friday. Saturday was rainy more on than off. So we only made a fire on Friday- mainly so we could do marshmallows and foil dinners. It was a good decision to make the fire dependent stuff on the day that was not rainy!!

So to make the fire, I raided our neighbors fire pit. They had just left and I found 4 half burned logs that were cold and dry. They also left the two unburned kindling in the photo. And a pile of smaller twigs that were soaked. So I took the half burned logs and the 2 pieces of large kindling back to our fire pit.

Our fire pit had a very wet base. So I took some cardboard and put it on the bottom. Then I really cheated and put two tea candles on the cardboard. I built a log cabin arrangement of twigs up around the candles and put a line of twigs making a roof. Then I put some dryer lint on the twigs and some wadded up paper and then put some larger twigs in a TeePee method over that and the half burned logs and 2 larger kindling.

I then lit the candles and poof! the fire started and it never stopped! I was pretty proud of myself. I am a good fire builder, and I wanted to do it differently this time. It was fun and I had no problem with the wet base or wood. I had to dry up a lot of wood before it would burn.

Here I have added a bundle of firewood to burn down for coals to cook our dinner.

My feet are up and I am just enjoying the beautiful fire, sounds and just right warmth of the air. I wanted to shut my eyes and take a nice nap, but NO WAY! the kids came back to camp to use the fire.

They got the fixings for marshmallows - smores, that is. They wanted to roast them right away- even though the fire was blazing and there were no coals yet, they loaded up the roasting forks and went for it. Angel says that she prefers the flame to roast her marshmallows with because she didn't want to wait for the coals to do the better job. So, she mainly set hers on fire, blew them out and then ate them. Pilot was a bit more careful, he didn't want his to burn, he has a bit more patience that her.

This is Pilots first try at roasting, he decided that even though the log was a wonderful seat he would have to get closer to get his marshmallows into the heat of the fire.

I asked Pilot to bring two chairs over to the fire pit, but he only brought one. So he and Angel traded off using it. They really did a good job of cooperating. I was proud of them.

Pilot ate his marshmallows between graham crackers but when he did use chocolate, he used the original Hershey chocolate bar.

Here is Angel showing off her burnt marshmallow. One is bad, one is pretty good, at least in the lighting of this photo.

She put them between graham crackers with magic shell ice cream topping squirted on the marshmallow. She thought they tasted great!!

By the way, the marshmallow roasting was done before dinner! Isn't camping fun? I kind of let the kids do what they want when they want. They are bigger now, and understand what they are doing.

I finally decided to add some charcoal to the fire and after about an hour, the fire was nearly ready to cook. I made the foil dinners with help from the kids. I brought up premixed meatloaf in a large zip lock bag and made meat patties from that. Then we put sliced onions, potatoes and baby carrots in the packet. A sprinkle of onion soup mix, salt, pepper and a dash of water were added. Then we wrapped the meal. I used two layers of foil. The first layer was of non-stick and the second was heavy foil. They cooked in the fire for about an hour, 15 minutes too long is my guess. Still they tasted great.

Hubby had not come down from the mountain, so I served the kids first. They won the luck of the draw and got the unburned ones. Lucky kids! I then opened the last two and combined the good parts for Hubby and tasted from his. I had also made one baked potato that was only 1/4 burned and a bundle of fresh beans and baby carrots that turned out perfect.

They cooked and we ended up with two perfectly cooked meals and two generously burnt ones. But all was well as I was able to salvage a good amount of food from the two burnt ones to serve to Hubby.

I didn't get photos of the finished product. Forgot somehow. I sure wish I had because I would have enjoyed remembering how wonder it was.

Camping Food

I try to make do on our food for camping by using things we have in food storage. I also try to make things that can be done both on the fire or on the stove depending on the weather.

Here is my draft of what we may eat come camping this month. There are mistakes on this copy, but I ignore them and go on. It is hard for me to not make corrections and reprint, but I am trying to make-do here also. I had to print and then scan the menu to get it to post here. I have a lot to learn about computer manipulation! But it is here and ready for me to use.

Subject to change, but I have almost everything I need here at home, so I might go with this as written. Thought you might like a peek.

On my computer, when I click on the menu it comes up really huge. I just use Zoom and get it to where it is mostly on one page. Then when I go back to the post, the Zoom resets itself. But if you need to just reset the zoom to normal. Hope this helps.

You can see that I made lots of notes on my menu sheet. Everything from what pots and pans I needed to what dishes and things would be used. This helped the kids and I get things done efficiently and quickly.

Three.....

Three…

… places I’ve visited: Hawaii, Norway, Florida

… cars I’ve owned: 1979 Datsun B210 named Chester, he was a chestnut brown color. I saved and paid cash for this car at a car auction, $4300 in 1980. My second baby and my favorite was my 1988, Jeep Cherokee. It was white, big and made me feel macho! Then I got married and we have had a plethora of cars. I have a 2002 Ford Expedition that is a family hand-me-done that I thoroughly love! I hope this is my last car for a long, long time.

… foods I love: Mexican with green sauce, pizza and fresh baked white bread with lots of butter!

… jobs I’ve held: My favorite jobs are in construction. I worked for Big-D Construction and Union Pointe Construction as a Receptionist, Estimating assistant, bid runner and various other things from 1989 to 1994. These were my favorite two construction jobs. I was also a Daycare Director that was licensed for 84 kids from 2004 to 2007. Not my favorite, but my most challenging.

… authors I love: Louis L'amour- I personally think he is the best western writer in history. Alistair MacLean is a spy, secret agent type writer. I love spy, secret agent stories. Today I am loving Stephenie Meyer's works.

… places I’ve lived: Utah - Salt Lake City, Ogden, St. George, Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs. Idaho - Rexburg. Hawaii - Laie.

...one more place I've lived: Norway, many cities there.

… favorite hobbies: Crafting with many different materials. Cooking, baking and eating. Reading and writing.

… bones I’ve broken: My tailbone 3 times. Oops! that hurts. A broken baby toe. I have also torn my hamstring, very miserable. And this past weekend while camping, I tore a tendon in my foot/ankle. Miserable! I have not died yet from my injuries, and don't plan on it either!!

… TV shows I watch: 24, Bones, Lie to Me. .... more: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. I watch all my shows on the internet, because we don't get free TV signal and I won't pay for TV!!

… songs that make me turn up the volume (and dance in my chair! I don't dance in my chair!): Enya, Cold Play's Viva la vida, and anything I grew up with that happens to find it's way to the radio station. Rarely but fun when they do!

… stores I could spend a whole day in: Any hardware store, any kitchen gadget store and DI -or any second hand store!

… chores I put off as long as possible: Cleaning the bathroom, cleaning the house and cleaning the car. I guess cleaning is the thing I put off, but the funniest thing about cleaning is, that it really doesn't take that much time- unless you put it off too long. I just get distracted with the things I would rather do and enjoy doing.

… chores I kind of like: I like gardening, cooking and doing the dishes, organizing my crafts.

… things I would rather chew glass than do: My budget! Clean the garage! Dump the Trailer toilet!
